Šimon Kern, a young student designer from Slovakia has come up with a unique approach to recycle natural waste for creating green furniture. As part of his studies at Jan Evangelista Purkyně University in Ústí nad Labem, he created a prototype of Beleaf chair from a mixture of garbage leaves and bio-resin made from cooking oil waste. The eco-friendly chair consists of a biodegradable seat that sits over a tubular steel framework.

Since fallen leaves are reused as fertilizer by the tree, he also wanted to make use of the tree life cycle in creating furniture. He says that the steel structure of this chair mimics a tree, while seat indicates the fallen leaves that are used in a natural theme to make the seat. In the recycling process, all the materials are formed into a seat using compression molding, and after complete sanding, attached to the steel framework.

Processed leaves are visible on the seat of the recycled chair and draw attention with a distinctive appearance. As Beleaf chair is made up of fragile leaves, we can’t expect it to be durable furniture. But still, there is an option to replace the seat if it broken. It is a futuristic furniture concept and Kern is working to find more possibilities to recycle fallen leaves.
