Denmark and New York-based architecture firm Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) is not an uncommon name. Many of us would associate it with the world’s first artificial ski slope on a waste incinerator, the Hyperloop concept in India, and a research center in UAE that simulates life on Mars. Taking a leap into furniture design, BIG has recently developed the Voxel modular sofa for furniture company Common Seating. Voxel sofa is really flexible in form and can adapt to a family’s changing lifestyle.

Crafted as a low sofa featuring small rounded tube-like legs, Voxel comprises modular parts that can be moved, flipped and repaired separately. There is no need to change the whole sofa, if need be, only a particularly damaged part can be replaced or removed.

The block-like modular elements can be configured in multiple ways, from single unit sofa to larger ones. It can be used as a sofa, footrest, or a low stool as per needs of a user.

The Voxel comes in several hues and is assembled in a pixel-like pattern. It is made on demand and shipped directly from the workshop to a customer’s address.

It will not be wrong to say that there is a correlation between the Voxel and the BIG’s modular approach for building.
