Inspired by NASA’s solar panel technology and the natural beauty of flowers, Dutch student designer George Barratt-Jones has come up with a unique lamp he calls the Bloom. It is an interactive wall light that functions like a piece of art, even when it is not lighted up, thanks to its flower-like design.

The designer wants to provide users with an interactive way of using light. For this, the wall lamp takes the shape of a blooming flower and even has petals that can be opened up. Just like a lotus, the petals contract and bloom emitting light accorddingly.

In the closed position, the lamp offers a dimmed diffused light and when you unfold it – using the central dial – its size and brightness increases proportionately. The more you turn the dial, the more the lamp unfolds and the brighter the light gets. The lamp uses a specially made fabric that allows light to pass through evenly.

George Barratt has created working prototypes of the Bloom wall lamp, but unfortunately all of them have been sold out. He is currently working on creating a commercial version.
