HomeMade Modern is an online portal that shares simple and beautiful DIY home furnishing ideas. They mostly work on DIY projects created out of recycled or salvaged materials. On the occasion of Earth Day, Ben Uyeda (founder of HMM) was approached by RYOBI Tools to work on an innovative furniture project that uses their 18 Volt ONE+ Cordless Chainsaw to transform waste into usable home furnishings. And that is how this DIY wood log lounger was conceptualized.

Keep reading to read DIY instructions for the project.

Birch logs were sourced from a landscaping company (which would have been otherwise thrown away in landfills or burnt in fireplaces). He suggests using logs of 3” and 6” in diameter, as logs with wider diameter can be difficult to drill and will also make the furniture unit heavy.

He used 6” and 9” zinc-coated lag screws to affix the logs in shape of a lounger. Furthermore, brackets are screwed using deck screws on the underside of the lounger in order to strengthen the floppy parts.

Aside from the RYOBI Tools’ 18 Volt One+ cordless chainsaw, he has used also a cordless drill with 1¼ and ¼ drill bits. Iff you have zeal, you can create your own log lounger based on the instructions given below:

  1. Cut 18” long logs
  2. Drill large holes into each log using 1 ¼” bit and then join them together with short lag screws
  3. Drill pilot holes through the first log using ¼” bit
  4. With a socket wrench, drive in lag screws to connect the logs
  5. After completing the lounger, turn it upside down to check where it wobbles so that you can shape it at that point. Also, tighten the screws to make sure they stay in place
  6. Use brackets fixed with deck crews on the back of the lounger to strengthen the structure

If you are able to make this DIY wood log lounger, you can save money and add an organic look to your backyard. Though, sitting on it won’t be a comfortable experience at all. You would have to use some cushions to make it soft.
