For Halloween, people decorate their outdoor spaces in different ways. Halloween graveyard is one perfect example that interests a majority of homeowners. If you’re thinking of making one this Halloween, you first step should be figuring out on how to make a Halloween coffin – since it is the most important prop for that spooky display.

An Imgur user has shared his experience of DIYing a Halloween coffin, which might give you an idea of how to get started and finish up with a cool deal. He has used plywood panels, wood planks, wood glue, drill, jigsaw, miter saw, hinges, LED light strip and paint for the DIY Halloween project.

The DIY started with drawing and cutting out a coffin shape from a plywood panel using a jigsaw. The first cutout is used as a template to mark the second one so that they are same in size and shape. Now, the coffin was framed up by attaching wood planks on sides of the plywood cutouts using wood glue. Furthermore, pocket hole jig was used to strengthen joints.

The wider plywood panels formed walls of the coffin while lid was secured using hinges. After framing the coffin box, additional supports were added and holes were drilled on cross beams in order to pass through LED strips.

Finally, the coffin was painted – inside in black, and exterior was stained in extra dark espresso stain. It was weatherproofed with two cans of matte clear coat. A creepy hand crafted out of clothes hanger peeps out of the coffin, while masking tape is displayed as a cross on the coffin.

After all the hard work, the project reached fruition, and the DIY Halloween coffin was ready to be displayed in graveyard alongside other DIY’d things including fence, tombstones, and Halloween sign boards. The DIYer has complemented the overall outdoor Halloween décor with remote-controlled fog machine.

Making a Halloween coffin prop like this one requires moderate woodworking skills. The most interesting thing about this DIY is that you can make it as scary as you want. All depends on your imagination and creativity.
