German airline Lufthansa knows the value of its airplanes and the effort it takes to dispose of them, possibly why it has repurposed a decommissioned plane into furniture and other items.

They have launched the Lufthansa Upcycling Collection comprising travel accessories and furnishings for a home. The collection created in collaboration with Miles & More and Lufthansa Technik was presented in Frankfurt in August this year.

Sebastian Riedle, spokesperson and managing director of Miles & More GmbH informs,

Special thing about the Lufthansa Upcycling Collection is that something of the aircraft’s spirit can be preserved. There are so many possibilities to give discarded materials a second life in a different way. Together with our colleagues from Lufthansa and Lufthansa Technik we were enthusiastic about this idea right from the start and have created a true milestone with the new Lufthansa Upcycling Collection.

With the help of product designers and recycling experts, the company has sustainably transformed Lufthansa Airbus A340-600 D-AIHO aircraft parts into functional items.

The collection has three coffee tables made by Wilco Design. A coffee table made from the side panel of the aircraft. Standing on one leg in the center, it features a D-AIHO identification plate.

Another coffee table on the list wears a glass top. It is made from the skin of the plane and has two windows reminding of its old life. Interestingly the collection also features a table designed using an original flap of the aircraft.

Pricing for the aviation furniture pieces starts at €1,399 on the Lufthansa Worldshop.

The collection also includes wall bars, a tabletop sculpture, a wall clock and pillows made from business class blankets, all reminiscent of the plane of yesteryear.

All of these products, combining the past with a message for the future and evoking a sense of sustainability, will be available in limited numbers.
