Minimalism in all its glory – this in a nutshell defines the Single Cord Lounge, a lounge chair crafted from a single board of ash (designed by Josh Shiau). However, quite remarkably this not the only unique feature of the elegant piece. The ‘seat’ arrangement of the chair forgoes any kind of conventional upholstery or cushioning. Instead, the Single Cord Lounge comprises of around a 100 ft length of uncut cord that crisscrosses through various sections of the cork trimmed furniture. This novel arrangement takes ‘advantage of the respective strengths of rope in tension and wood in compression’, thus ultimately resulting in a sturdy assembly with impeccably clean lines.

So, as we can see, the usage of the extended cord is not just related to the minimalist aesthetics of the lounge chair. In fact, the designer has gone on to explain that a single cord design allows for the structure to shift its pressure to the various interconnected sections. This ‘flexible’ distribution in weight helps during the actual seating process, when the tension (generated by the cord) is adjusted to the person’s mass using the chair. The ultimate result is a physical play of lines and motion that efficiently serve with ‘latent’ dynamic attributes inconspicuous to the naked eye.
