Light bulbs have remained largely unchanged in their design and materials for years. Egglamp, a creative brand from the Netherlands, challenges this norm with its collection of lamps made from authentic eggshells. For this year’s Dutch Design Week, the company teamed up with Japanese artist and designer Ayano Koda to create a special edition lamp crafted from broken eggshell pieces carefully reassembled into a one-of-a-kind design.
Founder Ruben de Haas launched the Egglamp in 2023 and has developed a new version for this year’s edition featuring a broken exterior design with visible cracks that glow when the lamp is turned on. Interestingly, the lamp’s soft light and texture give it a surprising resemblance to a salt lamp in the night.
These egg light bulbs look like real ones and emit a warm glow. The company has also designed a unique lamp fixture that mimics an egg carton but it is made from one kg of cement. Simply plug in the egg bulb to use it as a table lamp. There is also a B-Egg version, crafted from unsold eggs never found at supermarkets for an eco-friendly touch.

Each lamp features a 2-watt LED that produces a warm 2700K light and offers a long lifespan of 10,000 hours. The eggs used to create these lamps are mostly organic and sourced from local farms. The insides are used by small bakeries in Amsterdam so that no part goes to waste in the manufacturing process.
