Some chair designs come and go, but some conquer the time itself. Take the classic Dezza armchair for instance, which was first designed in 1965 by a revered Italian architect and furniture designer Gio Ponti. The mid-century chair is now 60 years old. On the occasion of its 60th anniversary, Italy-based furniture maker Poltrona Frau brings back the refined version of this iconic armchair, draped in Ponti’s enchanting hand illustrations for a gripping effect.

Transcending space and time, Dezza comes back in a limited edition with only 60 pieces available. The expressive patterns on the armchair celebrate sixty years of history, nostalgia, and timeless grace. It has now been transformed into a refreshing, bold, and new piece, blending Ponti’s genius with the brand’s unparalleled craftsmanship.

Dezza armchair strikes a perfect balance between a creative mind and artistic hands. Furthermore, it is characterized by modern tailoring, square lines typical of Ponti’s design, and sleek, contemporary Pelle Frau impact-less leather upholstery. The curved armrests and contrasting buttons add a sensual appeal to the furniture, whereas its strong legs have an angular stance for enhanced poise.

However, the striking hand drawings on the upholstery take the armchair to its zenith. Poltrona Frau found the opportunity too good to let go and imprinted the draping with Ponti’s unreleased illustration – discovered in a privately owned, unpublished drawing purchased at auction, according to Wallpaper – that features 26 unnatural hands all over the textile.

These hands have their own designated names and defining characteristics. For example, there is a ‘Gloved Hand’, ‘Starry Hand’, ‘Pierced Hand’, and ‘The Fortune Teller’s Hand.’

Whimsical enough, these artworks evoke a sense of playfulness and spark creativity among the viewers, while imparting the armchair with a sophisticated synergy. Symbolically, these detailed drawings represent the ability of the hands to create, reshape, and transform as the brand states, “intelligence of the hands.”

As aforementioned, this illustrated makeover of Dezza armchair comes as a limited edition of 60 pieces. Each piece in the limited run has its number with a metal tag on the back with proof of authentication.
