Donghoon Sohn, a Korean designer and the founder of Atelier SOHN, has designed the Fishbox series by recycling the wooden fish boxes used in the Busan Cooperative Fish Market, the largest port in Korea. The idea of converting the fish boxes into a furniture collection was derived from nostalgia as the designer reminisced about his childhood playtime in the port.
While playing in the port as a child, Sohn observed fishermen using the fish boxes for multiple purposes. After reminiscing the memories at the port Sohn wanted to execute the same idea through his designs. Hence was born the Fishbox furniture collection, which features a chair, a high chair, and a side table.
Unlike other high chairs, the Fishbox chair’s base is in box shape and has a backrest but no armrests. The wooden box base of the high chair is elevated from the ground with four legs, while the other chair has a wooden box as its base without any legs. The base of the low chair is opened up and divided into two sections to form storage. The side table can be used in your bedroom or living room or as a coffee table.
Sharing the project on Instagram, Sohn wrote, “The letters and numbers written on the boxes during the distribution process serve as both a record of the history of the wooden fish boxes and an intriguing graphic element.”
For those wondering about the lingering fish odor, Sohn focused on the drying method to eliminate the foul scents, similar to the fish-drying process under the hot sun. The Fishbox series is not just a creation of his nostalgia rather the designer intends to meet the sustainability goals.
