Looking more like the chair which teleported straight from some mythical era the Exocarp Chair thankfully is made in this very era. Achieving this kind of design without the help of technological assistance is difficult and the use of 3-axis CNC mill on three sheets of birch plywood truly compliments the end result. The man behind this creation is Guillermo Bernal who has an architectural degree from Pratt and spends most of his day by using specialties of algorithmic design and advanced digital fabrication.

Design inspiration for the chair clearly reflects the pattern of reptile’s scaly skin and the rough skin of fruits such as cantaloupes and avocados. The parts of chair body on the inside where the user sits are very smooth and ergonomically correct whereas the ones on the outside are extremely textured and irregular to show off the effect of function versus rough beauty. All-in all the Exocarp Chair really looks different and would most definitely have some eyeballs turning.
