Montreal-based design studio JJJJound’s latest project takes a creative turn by utilizing cardboard packaging to craft lamps. For this, the studio teamed up with Korean artist Gyuhan Lee, known for transforming everyday items like McDonald’s paper bags into creative lamps. Blending traditional craftsmanship with modern minimalism, the project turns simple materials into functional and visually striking objects.
Lee is well known for reusing branded paper materials, and for this project, he used JJJJound’s packaging bags and box tape as primary material. He layered the packaging with traditional Korean hanji craft paper to create a lighting piece that feels delicate but strong. The design balances the clean look of mass production with the detailed touch of handmade work.
Each lamp features a minimalist steel bar frame with four slender legs supporting a cube-shaped structure. The lampshade made from recycled JJJJound packaging bears the brand’s original tape to remind of its past life. When switched off, the lamp resembles a simple cardboard package. But once turned on, it transforms into a floor lamp emitting a warm, soft glow capable of adding depth and character to any space.
Inspired by grid patterns in minimalist architecture, the lamp’s design is simple yet elegant. The choice of materials depends on the maker’s creativity, and this project highlights that by using cardboard as a lampshade.
These cardboard lamps combine JJJJound’s minimalist design philosophy with Lee’s artisanal techniques to redefine the boundaries between product design and contemporary art. The lamps are available in two sizes, but the pricing hasn’t been revealed yet.
