The continuously increasing air pollution has made modern homeowners follow different strategies to improve indoor air quality. From humidifiers and vaporizer to air purifiers, there are a variety of air-purifying devices available on the market; however, you will be glad to know that IKEA, the Swedish furniture giant, is developing a new and unique way to reduce indoor air pollution. The company is working on Gunrid, an air-purifying textile which opens up new possibilities to improve air quality at home.
Product Developer for GUNRID, Mauricio Affonso said,
We wanted to create a simple, convenient and affordable way to clean air that wouldn’t take up much space in people’s homes. We were also curious about creating a product that is multifunctional and that would help break down air pollutants that many air purifiers leave behind.
Working with universities in Europe and Asia as well as IKEA suppliers and innovators, the company has developed Gunrid air-purifying textile by applying a coating of mineral-based photocatalyst to fabric. It works similar to the process of photosynthesis. It activates as soon as it comes in contact with light and breaks down common indoor air pollutants such as odors and formaldehyde. There’s no need for electricity since the air cleaning process is activated by light.
In the last few years, IKEA has been ideating tech-infused items for home decor and furnishing, these include, but are not limited to, smart lighting solutions and smart window blinds – the Gunrid air-purifying curtain just takes this idea to a new high. IKEA has successfully tested the product in the laboratory and is now testing in real-time home environment to confirm that it efficiently removes volatile organic compounds.
The Gunrid air purifying curtain is expected to be available in IKEA stores next year.
