If you are looking for a portable outdoor speaker with enough power to fill large rooms or open spaces, the JBL Boombox 4 is a great choice. As the successor to the Boombox 3, the new model is slightly larger, yet nearly 2lbs lighter, and retains a similar design with a built-in carrying handle for easy transport to parties and gatherings. With the upgraded IP68 rating for dust and water resistance, it is built to handle outdoor adventures with ease.

The redesigned JBL Boombox 4 is a powerhouse portable speaker that offers major technical upgrades in bass power, sound balance, and battery life compared to the predecessor. It now packs two larger woofers, two tweeters, and three passive radiators for a fuller, more balanced sound. The Boombox 4 adds a third passive radiator and replaces the subwoofer with two mid-range drivers to deliver punchy bass and clearer sound.

Its power output is boosted by 50 percent when used on the battery. The speaker is approximately 4dB louder than the Boombox 3 and extends deeper in range, reaching down to 37 Hz, compared to 40 Hz on the previous. With JBL’s AI Sound Boost, the drivers push harder and play louder while staying crystal clear. This results in refined highs, booming lows, and a tight overall sound at any volume. Bass enthusiasts now get two custom modes: Deep Bass, which delivers a rich low-end performance, and Punchy Bass, designed for more energetic beats. As a design addition, the JBL logos on the speaker glow white or orange when Bass Boost is enabled, a common feature in current-generation portable speakers.

For better audio quality, the Boombox 4 also supports USB-C lossless audio for high-resolution wired playback. It also supports Auracast for wireless linking with newer JBL speakers, though it won’t connect with the Boombox 3, which would have been a great addition.

If desired, you can customize the default sound profile with a three-band EQ in the companion app. For controls, four basic buttons light up to power on/off, connect via Bluetooth or to other speakers, and boost bass. There is also a USB Type-C output slot in the back, which can be used to charge mobile devices during parties, gatherings, or on the go. Also, there is a battery life indicator on the front, and a covered charging port alongside a digital USB-C input for high-resolution audio.

The Boombox 4 has a larger 99 Wh battery (up from 69.7 Wh on the Boombox 3) that enables up to 28 hours of playtime in normal mode, or 34 hours in Playtime Boost mode. The removable battery can be accessed through a sealed panel on the bottom. The improved battery and audio features make this speaker perfect for outdoor parties and even by the poolside.

If you are looking for a loud yet portable speaker upgrade, this one is the best option given the improvements over the predecessor model. Available in three colors, JBL Boombox 4 can be purchased right away for $550 from the official website.
