Making furniture from recycled plastic has become a common affair with multiple such designs popping up every now and then. Swedish creative studio Interesting Times Gang has also joined the streak with its Kelp Collection. It is a large-sized, 3D-printed furniture line made from a material that combines recycled fishing nets with wood fiber.

The furniture line is commissioned by two-star Michelin chefs Niclas Jönsson and Daniel Höglander for their new sushi restaurant concept, Black Milk Sushi, located in Stockholm, and opening in spring 2022. They wanted Interesting Times Gang to conceive something out of the ordinary which hadn’t been seen before.

It’s the innovative material that makes the Kelp chair collection unique and sustainable. These 3D-printed pieces stay within the same material ecosystem after reaching the end of their lifecycle. They can be converted into new bio-materials that can be reused again and again for a closed design loop.

The Kelp Collection is inspired by biomimicry with undulating lines and organically swaying silhouettes of its namesake ocean vegetation. The 3D-printed chair highlights the degrading conditions of underwater kelp forests and other marine species due to plastics. Sweden has been consistently on the list of the cleanest countries in the world for years and this project backs its mission of circular economy.
