Birdhouses come in a variety of shapes, and their designs significantly affect which birds they attract and how well they function. The N+Nest project takes this idea to a simple pyramidal form that can be turned into a modular birdhouse system if needed. Built by architecture students from Islamic Azad University, Central Tehran Branch, under the guidance of Studio Mahyar Architects, these wooden pyramid houses seamlessly integrate into urban and rural settings. They are designed to offer easy installation, low-maintenance design, and protection from the elements.

The pyramid shape not only adds structural stability but also adds a unique visual element to the birdhouse. It can be installed in two directions to suit different spaces and styles. With adjustable fixtures, it securely mounts on trees, branches, or can be placed on flat surfaces, including walls. This easy installation feature makes it especially suitable for urban settings where trees might not always be available.

Each birdhouse unit can be rotated or mounted in different orientations. It can face two opposite directions, allowing you to position the entrance for protection from wind, sun, and weather. The design also emphasizes easy maintenance, good air circulation, and climate protection.

These birdhouses are designed to be modular, allowing you to interconnect multiple units or place them adjacent to each other to create a larger complex that can accommodate multiple bird families. This modular system is ideal for community parks and large gardens.

Wood has been chosen as the main construction material because it naturally insulates against heat and cold. The wood is treated for weather resistance to ensure durability and the safety of the bird’s habitat. Its insulated walls keep the inside comfortable while an overhanging roof blocks rain. There are also ventilation holes to ensure continuous airflow and prevent the buildup of heat and moisture.

Another key aspect of these birdhouses is ease of maintenance. Each unit is equipped with a removable side or bottom panel, allowing easy access and cleaning. This feature is essential for maintaining hygiene within the birdhouse and preventing the buildup of parasites and diseases. The N+Nest modular birdhouse not only serves as a habitat for birds but also acts as an urban intervention that reminds people of nature’s role in city life.
