The TV industry is not just about OLED, as brands are also putting focus on RGB Mini-LED TVs. Philips is a great example of it. For 2026, the Dutch brand goes beyond OLED, unveiling the MLED981 from The Xtra series as its first RGB Mini-LED TV. It is positioned as a premier choice for those who want the cinematic depth of an OLED but require the extreme brightness of an LED for well-lit rooms.

The MLED981 TV adopts RGB Mini-LED technology that replaces traditional blue LEDs and quantum dots with separate red, green, and blue LEDs to achieve 100% BT.2020 color volume. The RGB Mini-LED backlight includes 11,520 zones and offers an impressive peak light output of 2,500 Nits. The main focus was on the overall picture quality with better control of halos and motion artefacts.

This RGB mini-LED TV is equipped with a 10th Gen AI P5 processor for improved AI HDR tone mapping that offers better contrast and highlights. There is also a new AI HDR expansion/restore feature that uses frame-by-frame analysis to measure the incoming HDR signal and restore the original light output of the content, as per the peak light output of the display. It uses a 165Hz panel with 97% DCI wide color gamut coverage and supports Dolby Vision IQ Max for enhanced visual performance.

The three-sided Ambilight lighting system further creates an immersive viewing experience. This effect makes the screen feel larger, improves perceived contrast, and reduces eye strain. The TV also supports the new Matter-enabled AmbiScape feature that allows you to extend the ambient lighting effect into the viewing area. You can connect the MLED981 TV to up to four external Smart lights.

Much like the 2026 OLED lineup, the MLED981 runs on the latest version of the TitanOS Smart TV platform and is powered by a MediaTek Pentonic 800 chipset, enabling four HDMI 2.1 ports. With a wide 48-330Hz bandwidth, it supports high-end gaming PCs for ultra-smooth motion in fast-paced gameplay. The display comes with a 70W 4.1-channel sound system, comprising two down-firing and two side-firing drivers, along with a rear-mounted subwoofer for immersive audio.

As for aesthetics, the Philips MLED981 RGB Mini-LED TV features an extra-narrow metal bezel frame with a thin brushed strip across the bottom of the screen to match the metal ‘edge’ arched feet in a Satin Chrome Sheen finish. The TV will be available in an 85-inch screen size when launched in October 2026.
