Unlit Design translates a mid-blooming flower into a sculptural form by introducing the Poppy table lamp. The lamp mimics the delicate unfolding of the eponymous flower, evident in its artistic pleated geometry. Situated in Jersey City, United States, the design studio shaped the table lamp to capture the softness of a pleated fabric in a solid form. The resilient table lamp has a calm presence with its beautiful but straightforward design.
Through the delicate rhythm of pleated fabric, the Poppy table lamp showcases the quiet unfolding motion of a poppy flower. The design studio translated this unfolding motion into striking pleated forms, mimicking petals as they open outwards. The ridges of the floral lamp reflect light in a layered manner and cast dynamic shadows.
The soft, angled folds in the pleated structure provide an ambient, warm glow that feels easy on the eyes. It looks visually appealing, especially when light falls on the table lamp, creating a visual interplay of shadow and light.
This geometrical form doesn’t just provide gorgeous aesthetics but also gives functional benefits. The geometrical form equally distributes the impact of the force across the entire lamp rather than concentrating on a single spot, making the table lamp resilient.
Poppy was inspired by the softness and quiet presence of the poppy flower, and we added sleek lines informed by textiles. We wanted to capture the fluidity of fabric and reinterpret it through digital fabrication. With the help of 3D software, we planted our idea into splines and potted it into the form of polygons, translating textile-like movement into a structured form and creating a sculptural lamp where fabric meets code

Digitally crafted using sustainable bioplastics such as PLA and recycled PLA, the sculptural table lamp features a translucent, glittery, matte-style finish. The lamp has a chalky yet soft-to-touch, velvety feel. The matte finish material absorbs the harsh light and diffuses it softly. It creates an illusion of the lamp glowing softly from within rather than reflecting the light, unlike other lamps. The materials and design give it a statuesque appeal, whether lit or not.

The eye-catching lamp measures 14.1 inches long and 9.4 inches wide. With such measurements, you can use it as a modern sculptural bedside lamp for cozy ambient lighting. The table lamp uses a standard, replaceable LED bulb that offers 500 lumens of soft, ambient lighting.
