Creative use of existing materials and finding alternatives has become one of the most important aspects of the home design world. We have seen this material consciousness in projects like Juyong Shim’s Horn Collection made from recycled speakers, and Studio TOOJ’s Duk furniture collection wrapped in a biomaterial grown from mycelium.
The 2025 NYCxDesign echoed the same spirit, where designers explored unconventional materials like ceramic, felt, and paper. Another similar design we would like to highlight is the Dust Order furniture collection by Roc H Biel, which is crafted from upcycled beech wood dust. Biel’s work re-imagines classical architecture through modern material alchemy.
This sculptural furniture collection gives a modern twist to the conic proportions of Corinthian columns. Blending classical design with minimalism, it re-imagines weight, rhythm, and decoration in smooth, simple forms.
Developed as a personal project and presented at Salone Satellite 2025, the collection consists of a sculptural chair and a modular desk system, each telling a story of perception, contradiction, and new material possibilities.

The desk features 3D-printed columns made from a mix of magnesium and beech wood dust that gives it a sand-like texture. It is a modular three-piece system that easily transforms into a stool, bench, side table, desk, or dining table.
Pictured against the backdrop of a Welsh slate quarry, the setting reinforces the collection’s themes of legacy, industrial decay, and poetic resilience. The Dust Order furniture collection explores adaptability, architectural rhythm, and the contrast between old and new materials.
