Dutch designer Sabine Marcelis’ latest project for Milan’s contemporary rug company, cc-tapis, is neither a piece of furniture nor a furnishing, instead it is a combination of both. Named Roll, it is a cleverly conceived rug that doubles up as a furniture piece. The inspiration behind this unique contraption is the midway rolled rug. These are limited-edition pieces, presented in a site-specific installation within the Valner Residence at the 2026 Mexico City art week.

This distinctive object is inspired by the act of unrolling a rug, where it turns from a flat surface into a sculptural, rounded form. Each piece works as both a surface and a seat simultaneously. There are different ways to use it depending on specific perceptions.

As described by the designer, “Roll suspends the rug mid-action, transforming it simultaneously into a rug and a seat. The textile surface becomes a place for the body, while the rolled element assumes the role of a backrest.” The design aims to turn everyday gestures into poetic objects.

Each unit comprises two elements: a rug section and a hard roll on the other end. When it is lying on the floor as a rug, it can be a eye-catchy item to add a pop of color to interior design projects. In the pictures, you can see the designer sitting on the rug and resting her back on the rolled end. This turns the rug into a multi-functional piece that serves as a seating unit.

Sabine has employed a contrasting material to achieve a comfy and inviting look. The rug uses hand-knotted wool, which is further carried to the roll-end element made from translucent resin. These elements are different in form, but they are united by a uniform color palette.

The Roll rugs are created at cc-tapis’ in-house prototyping hub using robo-tufting with a motive to push the boundaries of rug-making for creating a functional and sculptural object.
