British-American designer Jony Ive of LoveFrom studio has collaborated with Japanese brand BALMUDA to design a marine lamp whose light resonates a natural flame. Built to withstand dust and water, the Sailing Lantern is perfect for outdoor adventures, and you can even take it on your beach trip, yacht, ship, or cruise. Ive’s design approach includes a golden finish and a flower-shaped dial for this avant-garde lamp.
The portable Sailing Lantern depicts Ive’s struggle to find a long-term lantern that could withstand water conditions. The lamp is crafted from marine-grade stainless steel and precision-ground glass to withstand harsh maritime conditions, including raging winds, striking sun, and salty spray.
Due to these durable materials, the lantern has a long life. Its parts are designed for easy maintenance and repair. Another key feature is that it can be recycled at the end of its life. Additionally, the lens guard has a glowing golden detailing and a polyester lanyard, which repels salt and oil.
The lantern has a pair of LEDs inside the light source that can be combined in different ratios using the flower-shaped dial. This setting allows the light to go from a dim, warm-toned shade to a bright light with the help of a button.

When you turn off the lamp, the light dies gradually, imitating a live flame. The lantern is equipped with a lithium-ion battery that works for 65 hours on low setting and four hours on high setting. The Sailing Lantern uses a USB Type-C power supply.
The lantern is 4.5 inches wide and 4.5 inches deep with a height of 6.9 inches. It weighs approximately 3.4lbs and, therefore, is easy to carry. The Sailing Lantern is made in a limited edition of 1,000 units. If you wish to buy, it can be preordered for $4,800 from the official website, and the shipment begins on 16 March.
