Analog media making a strong comeback isn’t an exaggeration nowadays, but rather a stark reality. The internet is flush with stories and enough proof to testify that audiophiles are shifting away from digital streams and wireless audio gear towards vinyl and cassettes. Cashing in on the trend, Japanese music collective ZUTOMAYO has teamed up with Orion to launch the SCR-B9(Z) limited-edition boombox.

First reported by Wallpaper, this collaboration between the ZUTOMAYO and Orion is set to hit shelves in March 2026. As detailed by Hypebeast, the SCR-B9(Z) limited edition boombox is an ode to Orion’s iconic 1970s/’80s SCR-B9 “radical cassette” model. The original SCR-B9 series defined the boombox craze of the ‘70s and ‘80s with its bold, street-ready designs that turned any space into a party.

The SCR-B9Z aims to carry that legacy forward with its blend of vintage design and modern tech. As highlighted by Gear Patrol, SCR-B9Z  isn’t a replica of its predecessor, but the two models do share some similarities. This includes an integrated AM/FM radio tuner, cassette player, and several other attractive components. As an add-on, an integrated CD player is available for those who prefer discs over cassettes. In addition to playing cassettes and CDs, the SCR-B9Z also supports AM/FM radio via digital tuner, and can even stream via Bluetooth.

From an aesthetic standpoint, the boombox features the ZUTOMAYO logo on the front and artistic doodles on the tape deck. The boombox features a creamy, textured finish, accented by green and blue controls. It is also incorporated with retro features, including mechanical transport buttons for the cassette deck and two traditional VU meters. Lastly, we have an LCD screen that simplifies navigation, while adjustable sliders offer hands-on tweaking.

On the sound front, SCR-B9Z pumps out 20 watts through two 10-watt Hyperwoofer units, driven by 13.5cm full-range, 2-way bass reflex speakers and 3cm tweeters. The bass boost feature enhances ZUTOMAYO’s rhythmic tracks, delivering a warm, analog-like sound. You can also record from a CD to tape or convert cassettes to digital. Other notable features include karaoke-ready mic jacks, echo effects, and battery-powered portability, making it perfect for music lovers and party hosts.
