Over the years, we have seen a number of unique clocks, but if you are looking for a 3D printable wall clock with a USP, Lewis from DIY Machines has created something truly special. His 3D-printed Shadow Clock, inspired by Shiura’s popular Hollow Clock, features hands that seem to float in midair, creating a captivating visual effect. What sets this new version apart is its ability to project a large clock face onto the wall using a compact, high-powered LED. The project is all about combining a timepiece with the intricacies of shadow art.

Just like the original design, this clock features a hollow rim with two rotors to move the clock hands that appear to be floating inside the frame. The hour hand is loosely attached to the minute rotor to let it rotate freely. Its position is controlled by a clever system of three magnets: as the hour rotor turns, its magnet attracts the hour hand to point to the correct hour.

The Shadow Clock uses an LED light source to project the shadows of its hands. This results in a large display of time on the wall. You can change the size of the projection simply by moving the clock closer or farther from the wall. There are physical controls on the back to adjust both the brightness and color of the projection for a customized look.

The project integrates several electronic components, including a PCB, microcontroller, stepper motor, and a built-in web server to enable a simple web interface to let the user program scheduled scenes based on the time of day and day of the week. This allows the clock to do more than just tell time – it can gently wake you up in the morning or create a cozy atmosphere in the evening, automatically.
