The Sumo armchair, designed by Woo Furniture, has a voluminous, soft, dough-like, rounded form that resembles the Japanese dessert, Mochi. The bold armchair featured at Maison&Objet in January 2026, as part of the Woo Furniture collection. The sculptural form of the armchair reflects grounded stability with emotional resonance. Defined by its elegant but serene presence, the furniture creates an immediate visual impact and becomes the centerpiece of any room.
Inspired by Japanese artistic tradition, designer Nikita Bukoros gives the armchair an expressive character by blending contemporary Japandi aesthetic with timeless cultural values. The simple design and voluminous silhouette of the furniture create a cozy embrace effect by wrapping around the user. Its softly rounded form removes visual clutter and enhances the spatial flow in the space.
The designer sculpted an eye-catching armchair from materials like plywood, foam rubber, and textile. The flawless upholstery of the meticulously stitched fabric fits around the form perfectly and provides a fluid, structural beauty to the armchair. The Sumo armchair measures 34 inches wide, 27 inches tall, and 38 inches deep. The generous measurements make it a deep, lounge-friendly armchair with a significantly low height, giving it a calm, grounded presence.
The soft-edged armchair looks like a single, continuous, bulky mass with a thick, rounded perimeter. The smooth inner curve creates a comfortable, cocooning shape, while its thick upper edges function as both armrest and backrest. The tilted armchair rests on a semi-cylindrical base, giving it a solid support and a grounded character.
