Designed by EDAA, the Swaying Triangles bench is as intriguing as it looks. The bench explores the intersection of geometry and movement using charred wood to create a raw, textured aesthetic that contrasts with the industrial feel of a steel base. Part of EDAA’s Objetos collection, the bench focuses on the experimental design and physical properties of materials.
Using the wood offcuts from a previous project, the bench becomes a sculptural piece characterized by interactive motion consisting of 56 triangular wedges made of charred pine wood, giving it a deep, blackened texture. These wooden wedges are mounted on rocking steel sheets, which allow the entire structure to sway back and forth.
When organized in a rhythmic sequence, these wedges serve as the seating surface. The furniture piece explores the tension between the sharp, static geometry of the wooden triangles and the fluid, dynamic movement of the steel base.
The philosophy behind the Swaying Triangles bench centers on the dialogue between opposites. The use of charred wood introduces a philosophical layer of transformation and preservation. It turns the results of a destructive process into a functional, lasting object. The blackened, imperfect texture reflects an appreciation for the beauty of age and the time lived.

The wedges are arranged in a row using three possible arrangements – increasing, decreasing, and parallel – flowing into a circular form that evokes a landscape of gentle curves. It is supported by four threaded metal tensioners and two steel plates that serve as the legs.
Ultimately, the Swaying Triangles bench is not just furniture but a human experience. It requires human interaction to fulfill its design purpose: swaying. This aligns with the philosophical view that architecture and design are existential expressions that only become complete through the user’s presence and physical engagement.
