In recent years, 3D printing has become highly popular in furniture design and the upcoming 2023 Milan Furniture Fair will witness the trend. To that accord, Netherlands-based The New Raw will likely steal the show at the event with its new furniture that’s 3D printed with plastic waste. Built under the “Knotty” project, it is a collection of playful benches featuring a unique tactile texture that represents the potential of digital fabrication technology.

Inspired by knitting techniques, the project turns plastic waste into a continuous thread that folds, twists, and loops to create an intriguing tactile surface similar to textiles. This results in knitted patterns on the surface of the benches that are really appealing to see and touch.

If we consider the practical use of the 3D printed benches, they are suitable for outdoors. The knitted patterns facilitate water drainage and the hollow internal structure minimizes the overall production cost while ensuring sustainability – the theme of this year’s Salone del Mobile.

By using 3D printing and plastic waste as raw materials, the firm has managed to create contemporary and sustainable furniture featuring a unique textured surface. At first glance, it will appear like fabric but you get to know the real material after touching the surface. The Knotty benches made in three different shapes and sizes, and in two colors (mint and peach) will be displayed at Alcova, during Milan Design Week.
