After spending almost 24 years in a loft, an artificial Christmas tree bought for 6p at Woolworths in Dundee, Scotland, in 1937, was recently auctioned by Derbyshire’s Hansons Auctioneers on December 19. Charles Hanson, owner of Hansons Auctioneers said “it was among the first mass-produced Christmas trees made in the UK for retail sale.”
Looking at the historical value, the tree was sold to a private international buyer for £150 ($190). It belongs to the wartime England when people had limited resources, which consequently affected the people’s desire for having expensive Christmas decorations.
This 82-year-old Christmas tree stands 69 cm (27 inches) high and is made from toilet brush bristles.
According to Claire Barnett, daughter of the original owner, this Christmas tree was the centre of celebrations for 58 years in his grandmother’s home. But after her death, it was stored on the loft and now is getting a new home.

This Christmas tree reminds us that we don’t necessarily need expensive decorations to enjoy a happy Christmas.
