Tradition supplies loads of inspiration for modern creations. There are numerous examples where furniture designers find inspiration from old traditions and cultures. Now, architecture has become a medium for it. The latest example comes from Ukraine, where YOD Group has drawn inspiration from traditional architecture to build unique guesthouses featuring thatched roofs and clear glass facades. Located on a private estate, these holiday accommodations are a modern take on the traditional Ukrainian mazanka, an archetypal rural home shaped by local materials, climate, and cultural rituals.
The YOD Group has re-interpreted traditional Ukrainian vernacular architecture through a modern lens to build a contemporary architectural piece. They have replaced thick whitewashed walls with fully transparent glass façades as a modern design element, making the roof appear to float above the ground, especially during the day.
The thatched roof is the main element taken from traditional Ukrainian homes, but is kept deliberately oversized to become a standout architectural feature of the guesthouse. Its sculptural form looks like a traditional tall hat and an oversized mushroom rising from the landscape as well.
The interior of these contemporary mazanka guesthouses evokes modern eco-minimalism. You can see natural textures, calm tones, and Ukrainian design objects everywhere in the guesthouse, creating a quiet, grounded atmosphere. Apart from the most common facilities and features, each accommodation has an open fireplace from which guests can connect to the surrounding nature through large glass facades.

Another highlight of these thatched-roof guesthouses is the interior roof dome clad in wooden shingles that is reminiscent of traditional Ukrainian roofing materials and evokes the craftsmanship of past generations. Rising to a height of ten meters, the dome structure fills the space with a sense of lightness and airiness. At the same time, it allows concealing the engineering systems behind the walls for a visually clean look.
These 50-square-meter guesthouses represent a thoughtful integration of engineering into architecture, ensuring both beauty and functionality. They create a harmonious environment for guests to enjoy the outdoors.
