We have had the fortune of covering many glorious building projects by the users, starting from the Star Trek apartment to the 50,000 beer cans house. However, we daresay this is the first time we have come across a man who has built his own castle. Yes, a full fledged castle with all the works, including its very own bell tower, dungeon, drawbridge and even a moat! This titanic 12,000 sq ft endeavor was undertaken by artist Howard Soloman on around 100 acres of swamp area in Florida. And the end result is a gargantuan construction with five bedrooms, four bathrooms and a whopping 90 stained glass windows. And, if you thought that was incredible; the two-winged castle also has a full replica of a Spanish Galleon in its moat that serves as a 250-seat restaurant christened aptly as the ‘Boat in the Moat’.

The entire project took around 12 years to complete in spite of wild suspicions from many locals; some of whom thought of it as a big conspiracy to build a hidden nudist camp. However, after the castle was completed, it generated enough interest to emerge as a landmark place regularly opened to the tourists. Guests can conveniently access the aforementioned Boat in the Moat restaurant, along with staying in one of the castle’s room for $100 per night. The huge compound is also open to various other events like car shows and weddings.

The interior of the castle matches up with the level of eccentricity projected by outer silver faceted walls. The decor comprises of a myriad of abstract art pieces, complemented by sculptures of various animals like lions and elephants (presumably crafted by Howard Soloman himself). In fact, the artist has gone on record to say –

My love is working with my hands and so i’m very fortunate to be able to make a living doing something I love.
