Though Viva Magenta is the color of the year, it is hardcore pink that is hoarding all the limelight for now. This is all thanks to Greta Gerwig’s directorial film Barbie which has mainstreamed the pink power to a new high. So much so that I couldn’t resist myself from congratulating Katie Spenser, Production Designer of the film on how intelligently she and her partner in crime, Sarah Greenwood, incorporated the sets with hues of various pinks.
While filmmakers are going gaga over the touted masterpiece, it’s the furniture designers who are having their day in the sun with pink furnishings. The recent example is that of German designer Deniz Aktay, who has unveiled a furniture render dubbed the Barberry coffee table. The coffee table that gets its moniker after the film. It consists of a step-like folded metal sheet tabletop and a chrome-plated support tube.
The sheet is separated into four equal parts, each at a different height rising from the bottom like a spiral staircase. “Each step is a bit lower as the prior one to make the overall appearance more eclectic and to give each level its own characteristic,” Deniz tells Homecrux.

The metal support tube, on the other hand, takes inspiration from classic cantilever chairs making the design not only very lightweight but also exciting. The sheet is levitating at different points which is unusual in coffee tables. Adapting this feature from classic cantilever chairs, it becomes a hybrid piece of furniture.
“I want to give the metal sheet a very bright finish so I decide to use pink both to have a very fresh color and to follow the current Barbie trend,” Deniz states. Overall, the Barberry coffee table is not just functional but also capable of adding aesthetics to any interior. If you ask me, I find the table quite attractive. I can bet if the reel-life Barbie, Margot Robbie, came across this peach, she’d fall in love with it, too.
