Furniture plays a pivotal role in completing the décor of any home, office, or hotel. We witness loads of designs and concepts every year. Some become popular and live on, while some serve as an inspiration for other artists, and more interesting pieces are born. The Bend shelf by Spenser Atlas is an interesting furniture design that falls in the second category.

It is a modular shelving system that has come into shape through a collaboration between Spenser with an artist named Jim Isermann. The idea born in Palm Springs, California showcases units that can be combined to form a shelf. The units can also be installed to create a seating system. In this way, Bend Shelf can be used both as a shelf and a bench.

The materials used to create the Bend Shelf include plywood, exposed steel hardware, and Formica laminate. The thing I noticed about this furniture piece is that it can have variable heights as a shelf. You can use it in any space be it at home or office.

It can be in your living room, kitchen, bedroom, bathroom, or office as well. One can place a variety of things on the shelves like books, magazines, showpieces, small gadgets, photo frames, and more. It depends upon the personal selection and choice of the homemaker.

If you don’t want to use it as a shelving system then you can use it for seating. The individual units can be separated and rearranged to form the desired sitting furniture. The natural color of the plywood complements any kind of modern interior. The symmetry of the shelf is one more aspect of it. It has an open design thus challenging the norms of traditional object design but keeping things simple all the way.

The Bend shelf has also been showcased in an installation by Spenser Atlas. I find it to be an evolutionary design that would break the norms of the furniture industry. What are your views about it?
