Recycling is becoming a prime factor in industrial design and this unique topographic coffee table by British industrial designer Charles Birk backs the point. Using recycled plastic, the designer has created two coffee tables featuring the topography of Mount Everest. These tables are more like an art sculpture than a piece of furniture.
One model is made using compression molded ocean plastic and the other one with a cast ground plastic mixture. Both the tables feature a glass top that sits over the gigantic base with a mountainous form inspired by the world’s highest mountain. The base has an uneven surface that will add nature-inspired essence to any space. It would attract dust and could be tougher to clean, but that for the sake of uniqueness is compromisable!
Charles said; “This is a product from my current notion and way of thinking of designing to use more of the materials we need to find a use for and to create long lifestyle products from it. This is opposed to the traditional design strategy of designing to use less of a material we need to avoid entirely.”
