The Chia-Chair is one of the most thought-provoking and unconventional pieces of furniture crafted by an incredible team of young designers; Alice Hultqvist, Emelie Sjoberg, and Linnea Nilsson; from the University of Gothenburg, Sweden. This thoughtful design stemmed from the idea of putting nature at the forefront rather than humans and giving more importance to it. The designers showcased that creativity knows no bounds with the Chia-Chair’s incredible configuration and concept of growing plants on a chair.

The Chia-Chair is not your quintessential furniture. It is primarily built to accommodate nature. In this unusual concept, the chair is used to grow and thrive plants. But how do they grow in this unconventional setting is a question to be asked.

Interestingly, the chair is not designed using traditional upholstery, rather the designers have used a knitted and knotted tube for the seat and the backrest, which serves as a planting bed for the plants. Its eye-catching ash wood profile supports a cushion made with wool socks stuffed with polyester.

The process of growing chia seeds involves soaking them in water before planting. Then water them twice a day and keep them covered overnight with plastic to retain moisture. The student designers crafted the Chia-Chair to be presented at the Stockholm Furniture Fair’s student-focused greenhouse section.

The idea is to make people realize the importance of nature, and how, due to our growing needs and dependency on natural resources, we are doing more harm than good to the environment. With that idea, the team made this incredible chair with plants as the main consumers and humans as bystanders. The concept is so intriguing that you can’t help but admire the beauty of nature in a bizarre setting.
