The ESKI.SUB glass loudspeaker by Prague-based designer Marek Kounovský is the outcome of a thoughtful combination of form and materials representing a specific musical culture. Through his idea of the speaker, the designer translates the visual language of Brutalist architecture and the cultural atmosphere of the UK grime music scene. The speaker’s design showcases its connection to the architectural style through unconventional use of glass tubes and steel accents, while the genre is symbolized using exposed audio components.

The ESKI.SUB is designed as a conceptual “spatial object” that explores the emotional connection between a listener and music. Rather than focusing on offering high-quality sound, it focuses on “researching the emotional expressions of the individual listener who experiences the music.”

Unlike the boxy structure of standard speakers, the designer has used frosted crystal glass tubes and 3D printed elements to build an open-sided enclosure that keeps the internal components always visible. The glass tube structure highlights strength as the main element of Brutalist architecture. A stainless steel plate is used to fix a subwoofer speaker that represents the low-end needs of the music culture. All the components are treated as a part of the aesthetic, making it a sculptural object rather than just an audio gear.

The loudspeaker gives away the traditional form of wooden audio equipment for a unique, geometric form that emphasizes structural clarity, just like brutalist architecture that inspired it. Its unique form reflects the project’s conceptual relation to the raw character of metropolitan environments and the cultural setting in which grime music emerged.

The ESKI.SUB loudspeaker combines multiple disciplines to create an emotional connection rather than just serving as a mass-market audio product. Form and material are the two main components of this unique speaker project.
