Beomsuk Ko of Kobeomsuk Furniture has a knack for making beautiful wooden furniture with traditional Korean carpentry techniques. The Korean woodworking studio has earlier awed design connoisseurs with a cabinet featuring live edges on drawers, and is craving attention yet again with a unique chair featuring a top that appears to float in mid-air.

It is part of the Floating Top dining furniture collection that consists of a table, chair and bench, with all of them seemingly defying gravity. The structural connections responsible for the spatial gap in the top plate can be seen from underneath the chair.

The designer has creatively utilized the shallow gap between the seat and the frame of the chair. This creates an optical illusion that the seat is hovering in mid-air without any support. As noted by Dezeen, this visual paradox is achieved by reinforcements that are fabricated beneath the top and seat.

The Floating Top chair sports a simple and straight shape. One can clearly see the handcrafted wooden joint details that are integral components of the chair. The maker has used traditional joinerys including sliding dovetails as well as mortise & tenon joint to highlight the beauty of Korean furniture design.

At first glance, you will perceive it to be any other ordinary dining chair but it eventually grows on you courtesy linear geometry and visible joinery that’s been used as a part of the chair design.
