The Knit Series by Toronto-based design studio Hollis+Morris, in collaboration with Amsterdam-based textile innovation studio BYBORRE, is a perfect example of sustainable design and material innovation. It comprises lighting fixtures covered in engineered textiles made from traceable, recycled yarns.
The fabric functions like a skin, creating a dynamic play of light and subtle texture that shifts with every angle. The collaboration has creatively utilized textiles as a core material in architectural lighting. These lights become more beneficial by absorbing sound and filtering ambient light.
Each Knit lamp comprises a cylindrical structure covered with a specialized fabric that uses three-dimensional knit structures to create a rich texture. Then come the glass globes arranged along the cylinder in a helical pattern, representing motion and fluidity. The lights are covered in unique fabrics that act as a membrane to diffuse light while adding tactile depth and warmth.
The Knit series is not limited to one cylindrical design. Its Molecule Pendant, presented at this year’s Dutch Design Week, features three red fabric-covered cylindrical structures of different heights with globes on both ends. This creates a form that looks different from every angle.

The Knit collection reimagines fabric in lighting as something that is both seen and felt. The duo also prioritizes local manufacturing, non-toxic finishes, FSC-certified wood, and reparability in the design of these fabric lights.
These fabric lights transform lighting into an experience rather than just a functional piece. They add character to a space and encourage viewers to see light as something spatial, emotional, and material. The Knit series brings together lighting, textiles, fashion, architecture, and sustainability in a responsive design.
