Hyderabad-based entrepreneurs Aruna Kappagantula and Prashant Lingam have given a new life to old tires in form of industrial chic furniture for offices. Instead of adding up to the landfills, the couple creates fashion-forward, eco-friendly furniture out of scrap tires.

The Indian couple runs Bamboo House India– a social enterprise that promotes the use of bamboo. Besides that, they take out time to encourage people to embrace recycled tires as functional home or office furniture. The recycled products created by Aruna and Prashant include tables, seating units, ottomans, sofas, benches, and vibrant planters for both indoor and outdoor use.

Although converting old car wheels into useful furniture pieces is not new to the world, but in India, it’s really something innovative and needed for environmental sustainability. The developing country really needs to take major steps to deal with problematic waste products that constantly increase pollution levels. Like many countries in the world, India is also struggling with the issue of disposing of millions of tires. To get rid of unused tires, most industries often burn them, and we all know how harmful that process is for our environment.

However, Bamboo House in collaboration with Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation works hard to stop such environmentally-irresponsible practices and even started a project for recycling the scrap. Aruna and Prashant along with their team are working on an experimental project, which deals in supplying recycled tire furniture to the entire North Zone GHMC office and Clock Tower and Bowenpally parks in Hyderabad.

In India, companies like Tire Recycling, IndoGreenEnviro, and BhagirathIndia are also doing their bit for recycling unused tires. But Bamboo House’s inventive way to turn these rugged rubber materials into fashion-forward furniture pieces is quite new in India. With no formal training and experience, the team behind recycled tire furniture has done a really commendable job. This way any environment enthusiast can also indulge himself/herself in DIY projects to create green home furniture for the better future of our planet.

Eco-conscious companies and consumers in India must bring home, as well as encourage others to adopt such green practices in their lifestyles to reduce their carbon footprints. The use of more and more upcycled products is certainly going to help developing countries fight the unstable climatic conditions.
