You may be having iRobot’s Roomba vacuum at home to clean your floor, carpets, or other flat surfaces. Now iRobot, Massachusetts-based makers of robotic vacuum cleaners, wants to bring the same technology to your lawn to make the annoying lawn mowing task easier for homeowners.

Although automatic lawn mowers are not new to the world, but the company’s Roomba version for lawns surely is. The automated lawn mowers have already become a trend in Europe; however iRobot’s robotic lawn mower is expected to take the technology to the next level.

The latest robotic lawn mower operates on wireless beacons that will act as boundaries to interact with robot. This will make sure that the robotic device stays within your lawn and doesn’t wander into your neighbor’s garden or street. These beacons used low power radio frequency within 6240-6740 megahertz range, the same range that National Radio Astronomy Observatory uses to view the spectral signature of methanol in space.

Due to this, NRAO was worried that the lawn mower will interfere with telescopes. So, they objected to use this technology and suggested the vacuum company to use a geolocation feature to keep the beacons from interfering with that. Despite objections from NRAO, Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has approved the iRobot’s new technology to build Roomba lawn mower, claiming that the technology uses limited range that would not harm astronomers’ work or other devices with similar frequencies.

This surely is a great news for the renowned vacuum makers and they’ve already started working on this latest technology. The new robotic mower would be blissful to homeowners, who often have to go through the tedious grass cutting tasks all by themselves. So far, there is no word on its pricing and availability. But it’s expected to hit the market soon and iRobot might use its existing robot-marketing network to sell these automatic lawn mowers.
