As a consumer, we often take a designer for granted. What we see on television, on billboards, and in reality is the actual product, but what we do not talk about are the years of work designers put into visualizing a project. This includes all the barriers, behind-the-curtain stories, and the challenges involved, leading to the final result. With the world celebrating the Salone del Mobile in Milan, we thought of revisiting an old design, which, if presented today in the digital world, would have gone viral for sure.

While thousands of new designs mushroomed out at Milan Furniture Fair, we revisit a carpet that does more than just insulate a person’s feet on a cold concrete floor. The idea of this carpet is simply incredible.

It is made by Paris-based research and design consultancy firm 5-5. The firm produced ‘Karpett’ for Tarkett about a decade ago. Tarkett was the world’s leading manufacturer of floor coverings for hospitals, schools, and other institutions at that time.

So, what’s the core specialty of the design that we decided to recce this gorgeous piece again? It is the rollable nature. The multipurpose roll-up carpet looks like the Cannonbolt from Ben 10 sci-fi cartoon series. At the onset, it’s like a bench but when rolled out it becomes a carpet where you and your friends can sit to work or party in comfort.

Be it exercising, playing with children, making a phone call, many of our spontaneous activities are on the floor yet little focus is put on the floor coverings. Karpett helps us carry out such tasks while keeping our feet’s warm and safe.

It can also be of additional help whenever a friend or a guest stays over, the Karpett can be unrolled into a guest bed. For children it also act as a playmat and if I am not jumping too far, this can actually be a yoga mat as well. All you need to do is unfurl the Karpett and enjoy the essence of comfortable seating.

I hope a design like this is exhibited at Salone del Mobile in the coming years. Well, I don’t promise to buy it but would surely pen it down.
