Mathmos, a British lighting production house, has been garnering accolades and recognition for designing cult classic lava lamps ever since its foundation in 1963. Celebrating its 60th anniversary in 2023, a collaboration between the finest figures of the design and fashion industry is seen to celebrate the Lava Lamp’s heritage through a spin on the beloved vintage lamp design.
The Astro Lamps perfect the futuristic spaceship-like look that is filled with a mix of water and wax-based liquids. The mesmerizing magical dance of liquids inside when the lamp is subjected to heat still remains a secret formula. These special Astros are made by hand in Britain and are limited edition with 600 pieces of each collaboration available worldwide.
Dutch designer Sabine Marcelis, British photographer Rankin, French creative Camille Walala, and Belgium’s Studio Job have been the driving force behind creating these vessels of magic that aptly run on mysterious mechanics. Each collaborator has moderately tweaked the original lamp design to create something distinctive and bold.
The hottest lamp collection-(pun intended) has five limited-edition lava lamps that enchant as they glow. Sabine Marcelis Lava Lamp displays a blank white canvas when turned off and glows with a subtle warmth and hue when lit up. Her design is a display of sensible merging between color, visual appeal, and light.
Pop band Duran Duran creates a lamp that radiates silver color when switched off and glows fiery pink through the metalized glass. Interestingly signatures of band members were etched into the lamp’s cap to add to the eminence of the lamp.

Job Smeets envisions a lamp that goes far and above in its creativity. Informed by actual lava, geological formations, and fossils, the lamp is finished with a gold base with sketchy skeletons.
French designer Camille Walala plays with colors that adorn geometric shapes to attract. Her creation is a mix of white, red, and violet colors, emulating the flow of lava liquid once lit up. A black top and base playfully contrast the internal colors of the lamp.
Rankin designs a lamp with a round base that is etched with lines exhibiting an aquamarine lava glow, keeping the original structure of the lava lamp intact. The Astro Lava Lamp Collection is set to be revealed this October with a quoted price of $158 on the Mathmos website, acquainting the world with the legacy of best quality lava lamps.
