Increasing popularity of shipping container homes has motivated architects around the world to incorporate smart functions into their constructions to provide better and smarter container housing to customers. Joe Chen, the executive vice president of Taiwan-based building material company Jon Yei E-Tech Co. Ltd. also initiated a smart container house project Living iHouse to promote a lifestyle that lets people live in congruence with nature, and yet enjoy modern facilities for safety, security, and convenience.
This 40-foot smart container house is fitted with convenient home away from home facilities like electrical hookups, smart lighting, shades, and security system that keep it cozier for residents. Rather than simply controlling it through the companion mobile app, the integration of voice functions makes the control more humane and convenient for its residents.
It is built from a shipping container measuring 12 x 3.5 meters. There is also a wooden deck on the front to enjoy in open air. The floor-to-ceiling glass doors bring in loads of light, as well as views of its surrounding areas. Solar panels are installed on the roof of the house to fulfill energy needs of the tiny cabin. Its walls are clad with materials that can absorb moisture and dissipate heat to keep the interior space cozy in all seasons. There are also plans to add rainwater storage system on the roof to collect and reuse the rainwater in shower or toilet.

The most innovative feature is the integrated smart home system, which allows residents to control home appliances, lights, home security system and other compatible household items through voice-commands. This system can also automatically adjust light and temperature levels inside the house to save energy. With this smart shipping container house, you don’t have to rise up to prepare your breakfast or open its window shades when you wake up in the morning, as it will do it all for you. It is a good option for designers looking for a studio, and people hoping to start a creative coffee shop, salon or any other business.
This voice-controlled shipping container home was exhibited in Taipei’s Xinyi District from August 11-13, 2017 and will be again displayed at the Huazhong Riverside Park in the city’s Wanhua District over the weekend, before being transported to Southern Taiwan to join the 2017 Kaohsiung Building Show during September 1-4.
