If you were impressed with WowWee’s Dog-E, I am sure KEYi Tech’s Loona would leave you floored. The robotic company from China has created a pet bot that’s a mix of adorable and functional and is making heads turn at CES 2024.

If you have always dreamt of having a dog or a feline but couldn’t have one because you are prone to allergies, this robot pet is specifically meant for you. It can play fetch, respond to gestures, and even run toward you just like a real pet. The small, yet cute petbot will melt your heart and be the perfect companion you’ve longed for.

Diving into the technicalities, the company has slapped a 2.4-inch LCD screen on Loona’s face that brings out the expressive personality of the home robot. In addition to basic features, the pet bot also has two emotive digital eyes. These make communication between you and your robot pet more natural. Not to mention, the onboard RGB 720p camera be used for remote monitoring of the home.

Integrated with four microphones and touch sensors in its body, Loona will respond to your verbal and gesture commands. The brushless DC motor allows it to move faster and smoother while the 3D ToF (Time of Flight) radar sensor helps it avoid obstacles and lets the robot plan its own trajectory.

It is a robotic pet that plays various interactive games with you, becomes a monitor, and also serves as a programming learning platform with built-in ChatGPT support. You can program the actions for Loona according to different logic through the Google Blockly programming program embedded in the Loona app.

Powered by a 1350 mAh lithium-ion battery, the home robot will cost you $382.00 (regular retail price $449) and can be ordered on the company’s website. While the company calls it the most intelligent pet robot, I’d refrain from using such a term. I’d rather call the petbot, playful, and affectionate.

On a personal note, I find it very disheartening that we are becoming a generation that’s lonely, depressed, and anxious. The worst part about all this is that we don’t even make efforts to gel with other humans, share our emotions, and console each other.

Social media, supposed to bury our boredom and connect us with people worldwide, has sadly become a tool that disrupts sleep and exposes us to bullying. On top of it all, we have become so lethargic that we don’t want to invest in a relationship with a pet too, leave humans aside.

Trapped inside the matrix, the 2.42 lbs Loona smart robot pet could potentially help you overcome stress and anxiety. It’s a single-time investment and you don’t need to fund any expensive pet or be afraid of allergies. The pet bot won’t spread any disease other than making you a tool of its toll.

You can sit on your couch drinking beer, wearing your VR goggles, and call your ‘fake pet’ to watch a game alongside you, while it does something dumb only to make you feel more numb.
