A restful night is important for overall well-being, and there are many key factors affecting the quality of sleep time you get during the night. The pillow you choose is one key consideration most people ignore, and more often than not, it is the culprit for your restless sleep.

Research shows that as we age, our sleep movement drops by 50 percent, leading to reduced pressure relief in the muscles. That’s the reason you feel groggy and stiff most of the mornings. This simple yet disruptive health issue can have long-term effects and should be dealt with proactively.

Unlike most solutions out there, TVC wants to address your sleepless woes with technology. With more than a decade of R&D, testing, and building prototypes, the Japanese wellness brand got deep down the rabbit hole of fine-tuning the motion, height, and positioning of the pillow during different sleep phases. The result, the Mirakuru pillow, is designed to bring a more natural sleep experience to the user, who eventually wakes up refreshed every morning.

The smart pillow has six built-in air chambers (4 vertical and 2 horizontal airbags), and more than 10 motion patterns that autonomously alter throughout the night for a swift movement. They trigger and accommodate different sleeping positions by adjusting the support zones based on the data fed in by the sensors. The real-time input about the sleep pattern, and which sleep stage the user is in, the pillow also initiates a gentle wake-up routine in the morning.

A sleep pillow inherently has to be comfortable for a cozy sleep all night long. The makers have cut no corners here, as it sandwiches the adaptive airbag system within the upper memory foam and lower memory foam layering. This is encapsulated by the inner stretch cover made out of breathable stretch fabric, and finally wrapped in the soft outer cover that is a blend of 27 percent TENCEL and 73 percent polyester.

Minimalism is at the core of the design, as this pillow functions like any other sleep accessory. All the sensors, powered components, and wires are integrated into a connected hub that stays away from the user’s sleeping area. Everything happens subtly in the background without disrupting sleep.

Mirakuru pillow measures a standard 600 × 400 × 80 mm and weighs a bit heavier at 4.2 owing to the air chamber system. That, however, is a trade-off most would be happy with given the overwhelming benefits this sleep accessory brings forth. If you’ve been struggling with sleep over an extended period of time, nothing gets better than this. As a precautionary measure, the smart pillow is not advised for infants, children, people with implanted medical devices, patients with sleep-related breathing disorders, or pregnant women.

The project is up on Kickstarter for crowdfunding, and already it has amassed 20 times the funding goal, which isn’t surprising. Early birds can pledge the smart pillow for a heavily discounted price of $261 that is limited to just 1,000 units. If you already love the idea of refreshing sleep every night, now is the time to make your pledge.
