Plastic stacking chairs, commonly seen in offices, schools, and event venues, are widely used for their affordability and convenience. However, their production and disposal contribute to plastic pollution. As the world grapples with the environmental challenges posed by plastic waste, furniture designers and manufacturers are increasingly seeking sustainable alternatives. One such innovative solution is the PEEL Chair.

A responsible alternative to the ubiquitous plastic stacking chair, the PEEL is made entirely from hemp. Likely, the development of the PEEL chair does not involve the use of harmful chemicals or toxins, which renders it safe for both the environment and human health.

A worthy result of circular design principles, the PEEL chair is made in collaboration between PROWL Studio and M4 Factory. The first-of-its-kind injection-molded chair, the PEEL is biodegradable and compostable, meaning it can naturally decompose without leaving harmful residues behind at the end of its lifecycle.

PROWL Studio and M4 Factory are both women-founded and woman-owned companies aligned by the idea of designing with – and – developing sustainable material alternatives to plastic. In this context, the PEEL is a response to fast furniture: It is a better alternative to the stackable chairs in our everyday lives.

PROWL is bringing the PEEL chair to the Salone del Mobile 2023 with Expect Death exhibition, held at Alcova, which has a new venue. The chair features a frame made from a compostable hemp-based bioplastic, developed by M4 Factory. The hemp foam cushion covered in hemp bioleather provides natural elasticity, offering flexibility and cushioning to enhance the sitting experience.

In fact, both the frame and cushion base material is hemp, but they have different composition thus the expected lifecycles of the two is different. The frame can take up to six months to decompose, while the rest can break down like an orange peel. But when in use, the PEEL chair is lightweight and easy to stack, allowing for convenient storage and transport.

At the end of its lifecycle – when it loses comfort or you want a new design – the chair in its totality can be quickly and responsibly disposed of. The sustainable production, use of biodegradable material, comfort, and positive social impact all contribute to making the PEEL chair an innovative solution to plastic chairs. We look forward to seeing how it is accepted at the upcoming furniture fair in Milan.
