Architecture studio Penda in collaboration with engineering firm Arup are designing a double-helix bridge made from converging rings, just like in the Olympic symbol. It is designed keeping in mind the Beijing Winter Olympics 2022. The bridge will span across the Gui River, and will connect Beijing with Zhangjiakou, a city where majority of main outdoor events during Olympics will take place. There are plans to develop the area around the bridge as an exhibition hub during the games.

The bridge is to be made from six converging rings, as symbolizing the Olympic symbol. It will appear like a trio of mountains when viewed from any side. It also justifies its name San Shan Bridge which means three mountains. This unique and green infrastructure is inspired from the mountainous surroundings of the city.

Three Intersecting helix-shaped steel arches carry the 452 meter long bridge deck. High-quality steel cables around the bridge are sculpted in a woven-pattern to strengthen it. For minimizing the use of steel in the contemporary bridge design, it is designed to be as slim as possible.

There are four lanes for vehicles, and both sides of the bridge deck have pedestrian pathways divided through greenery. The bridge is expected to complete by the Beijing Horticultural Expo 2019, and It will be represented as a contextual sign for the Beijing Winter Olympics 2022.
