Talented artists transform a hoop house into a gorgeous textile sculpture by covering it with vibrant quilt patchwork. The Quilt Shanty is a collaborative public art installation made by Emily Quandahl and Madeline Cochran for Art Shanty Projects 2026, on Lake Harriet in Minneapolis. The whimsical, colorful artwork of the hoop greenhouse stands out against the white, frozen background, showcasing the seasonal warmth and rural craft traditions embedded in the quilt.

Inspired by the tradition of covering rural barns with decorative quilt patterns in North America, the talented artists turned this inspiration into a large-scale art installation. The artists specifically chose a hoop house and covered it with a hand-painted quilt to mimic a blanket that protects crops from harsh winter weather. This creative idea weaves cottage core aesthetics with agricultural tradition and seasonal transitions.

The nine-foot-high and 16-foot-wide quilt patchwork covers the arched frame of the hoop house. The decorative folk art illustrations give a dreamy charm to the artistic installation. Textile artist Emily Quandahl built the large patchwork quilt by using repurposed material from her studio, such as leftover painting scraps and drop cloth fabrics. She used reclaimed colored vinyl to make keys for the interactive puzzle pieces inside the decorative hoop house.

Folk art illustrator and multimedia artist Madeline Cochran created original folk art on muslin and integrated it into the quilt patchwork. She also made square interactive puzzle pieces using a mix of wood and quilt, which visitors can use to create their own design. The idea behind making this was to turn the Quilt Shanty into a community hub where people can interact and share stories. It also serves as a shelter in the frozen surroundings.

The incorporation of various textile elements and blending them into one massive art installation is praiseworthy. The visible patchwork and uneven texture with vibrant artwork provide visual richness. It makes the installation look like a whimsical, dreamy blanket-like shelter surrounded by a frozen land. The visitors can explore the quilt-covered loop house upon entering and admire the beautiful woodcarvings and designs made by the wood-burning technique inside the shelter. They can also make their own artwork using the wooden blocks with engraved designs.

The Quilt Shanty is a brilliant, eye-catching collaborative project that turns a simple hoop house into a special gathering place. Its eye-catching textile sculpture is living proof of the talent and creativity of the artists. The stunning artwork done on each rectangular fabric will leave you speechless. The vivid art installation is like a social hub that encourages people to spend time while enjoying fun, interactive activities.
