Overlanders are often caught up in a dilemma. They either have to choose a full-size camper, which offers more space but sacrifices maneuverability, or pick a smaller vehicle that remains nimble but requires accepting a more stripped-down living area. Texas-based truck camper manufacturer Roam Rider thinks that trade-off is outdated. The company recently unveiled the Roam Rider SL, a lightweight, off-grid truck camper which it claims “feels like a full setup.”
While Roam Rider says it can build the SL to fit 6.5-foot beds or 5-foot midsize truck beds, the model was developed for 5.5-foot beds. The biggest USP of the Roam Rider SL camper is its three-way expansion system.
At odds with most pop-up campers that gain height by raising the roof, the SL adds a vertical lift and then goes further by pushing slide-out wings in both directions simultaneously. Those two lateral extensions contribute an extra 20 cubic feet (566 liters) of usable interior volume, transforming what looks like a compact shell on the road into a genuinely spacious cabin once parked. The camper rides neatly within the truck’s width when traveling, then blooms outward at camp.
The highlight, however, is not just that it expands but rather what these extensions carry. Instead of using the side wings for extra bedding or passive storage, Roam Rider has designed them as active equipment modules.
Case in point, the left wing houses a 69-liter Alpincool dual-zone fridge and a microwave, while the right wing deploys a sink and an induction cooktop. Each appliance slides out independently, meaning the kitchen only takes up floor space when it is actually being used. Other features include a fold-out worktop that doubles as a dining table.
Sleeping arrangements follow the same pattern. The lounge area, which seats up to four, converts into a narrow single bunk suitable for a child or compact gear storage. The main bed sits in the forward alcove and slides out each night over the dinette to form a full RV king-size bed, easily accommodating two adults.
Unlike most manufacturers that neglect conveniences inside the camper, Roam Rider has outfitted the space with a bathroom. The entryway floor doubles as a shower pan, and a ceiling-mounted curtain track creates an enclosed wet room on demand. For off-grid ventures, the camper comes loaded with a 1,500-watt water heater that feeds into a 91-liter fresh tank. A toilet is not included, but the lower cabinetry has space for a portable unit when needed.

From a durability standpoint, the camper boasts an aluminum-and-fiberglass shell insulated with XPS foam throughout, including the pop-up fabric panels. Climate control comes via a 17,500-BTU diesel heater and a 7,500-BTU air conditioner. Off-grid power runs through 400 amp-hours of lithium iron phosphate batteries, a 3,000-watt inverter, and 320 watts of rooftop solar.
The Roam Rider SL comes with some add-on options, too. These include a 600 Ah LiFePO4 battery for extended stays, a 360-degree security camera system, a separate vehicle charging system, and numerous other features. The Roam Rider SL is currently priced at $30,000 and can be availed from the company’s official website.
