Inspired by the art of icing cakes and motivated by a desire to repurpose discarded materials for good; designer Donghoon Sohn has transformed damaged sponges, from old sofas, into a collection of playful furniture.
Called Roll Furniture, it is a collection of visually playful furniture that explores the impact of force on elasticity and displays it to the common eye in a delightful manner. The furniture is made from foam discards which are attached using urethane rubber that appears to drool like cream between the cracks, reminiscent of a delicious roll cake.
The idea for such a furniture collection sprang to Sohn’s mind when his dog unintentionally damaged his sofa. Rather than discarding it, he saw an opportunity to give new life to the damaged sponges from it.
Drawing inspiration from icing cakes, Sohn then set out to repurpose the discarded sponges into Roll Furniture that comprises an array of furniture objects, including chairs, stools, and sofas, all strikingly unique and flowing with urethane.
By strategically arranging and connecting discarded foam, the designer has made structures that showcase the elasticity of sponge. To dynamically display this, he created inherent sponge furniture that depicts that when pressure is applied, the urethane rubber reacts to the bending elasticity of sponge, and drools through the cracks like creamy filling of a roll cake, creating a mesmerizing interplay of colors and textures.

By repurposing waste materials, Sohn contributes to the reduction of furniture waste, providing an alternative to the throwaway culture and highlights the importance of sustainability. Beyond their captivating visual appeal and environmental benefit, the Roll Furniture carefully balances aesthetics with comfort and functionality so each piece in the series is not only a work of art but also a practical addition to any living space.
