Camper trailers are popular in Canada because they offer an affordable, versatile, and comfortable way to explore the country’s vast natural landscapes, catering to both seasoned campers and families. In addition to offering a home away from home, they are also favored for their ability to offer comfort in various climates, with options ranging from lightweight, easy-to-store models for family road trips to robust, four-season units designed for the rugged Canadian landscape. One such model that hits all the aforementioned marks is the Skookum off-road trailer.

Designed by Alberta-based builder, Tactical Overland, this no-nonsense camping trailer is priced at $50,000 CAD (US $36,000). This is the largest model in Tactical Overland’s foundry, offering more interior space than its predecessors. Measuring 15.9 feet long and 7.8 inches wide, the Skookum camper trailer maintains a compact footprint that makes it easy to tow and maneuver on tight backcountry roads. Yet once parked, it transforms into a spacious base camp.

This is possible courtesy of its innovative pop-up roof system. When deployed, the roof lifts to create a wedge-shaped upstairs bedroom with a full double bed, while simultaneously providing over 8 feet of standing headroom inside the main cabin, perfect for changing clothes or moving around comfortably without feeling cramped. A sturdy ladder provides access to the upper level.

The camper is designed to withstand harsh Canadian conditions. The trailer rides on an engineered steel frame made of metal and composite materials. The makers have refrained from using any wood in the construction to eliminate rot, reduce weight, and withstand moisture.

Timbren 3500 HD suspension and a Max Coupler hitch deliver excellent articulation and stability over uneven terrain. Buyers can upgrade to 33-inch Falken Wild Peak tires on Black Rhino rims for even more ground clearance and grip.

Inside, the trailer boasts a convertible floor plan with an L-shaped sofa lounge that quickly transforms into a second double bed, offering comfortable sleeping for four. Other features include a swivel-adjustable table that serves as both a dining space and a mobile workstation.

There is no dearth of storage inside the camper. This includes a front console featuring overhead compartments, a lower shelf, and a MOLLE panel for gear organization. On the downside, there’s no kitchen or bathroom. The makers have outfitted both spaces outside for better airflow and mess-free living.

The right-side slide-out kitchen includes a dual-burner stove, a sink, and a generous 180-degree awning for shelter. We can also spot a 69-litre BougeRV dual-zone fridge/freezer tucked into the nose box, while an exterior pantry and deployable shower tent (complete with on-demand water heater) handle hygiene needs.

Skookum camper trailer meets its power demands via a 100-Ah self-heating lithium battery, with a Planar diesel furnace for reliable winter warmth and options for a 2000W Renogy inverter. The trailer hauls a 72-L fresh water supply. To explore more features, visit the official Tactical Overland website or watch the video included below.
