Juggling between portable devices for entertainment is okay when you’re in the outdoors, but back home, you need a stable setup that immerses you in sound from all sides. It’s a scenario possible with existing soundbars and expensive home theatre systems. However, to carve out a niche for its liking, Sony has released HT-AX7 portable theatre comprising a set of three Bluetooth speakers with 360 spatial sound mapping.

The speaker setup is tailored for an audience that wants to enhance the sound from a handheld or a nifty projection system installed at home. I say home because the weight and dimensions of the HT-AX7 don’t really vouch much for its portability, even though it is a portable speaker system.

A quick sync-up over Bluetooth and you’ll be cocooned in an immersive sphere of sound with minimal latency from the onscreen action, Sony multi-speaker set up ensures. This unique speaker system, available in neutral light gray shade, comprises a block-esque central speaker with controls, while two detachable disk-shaped speakers sit atop the main unit.

These tiny speakers can be plucked out of the central hub and placed nearby to create an immersive experience. Sony’s 360 spatial sound mapping technology kicks in when the smaller speakers are detached to make room filling sound possible. And when these speakers need charging, some 30 hours of use later, you will have to attach them back to the main unit and reuse after a round of magnetic charging.

This convenience of a solid surround-like sound setup with Sony HT-AX7 comes for $499. It’s not the most affordable option at that price, but the clever three-in-one wireless design makes it possible for create an interesting theatre-like experience at home without tangling wires and displeasing speakers. On the contrary, HT-AX7 portable speakers are a peach to the eyes wrapped up in fabric made from 100 percent recycled PET bottles.
